Coal Tar Major Products
How coal tar is formed
Coal tar is formed when coking coal is processed into metallurgical coke in a recovery-type coke oven facility. It accounts for 3-4% of coke production.
Coal tar represents a mixture of condensable volatile products formed during the dry distillation of bituminous coal. The composition is variable but usually consists of 0% to 2% light oils (mainly benzene, toluene and xylene), 16% to 18% medium oils (mainly phenols, cresols and naphthalene), 8% to 10% heavy oil constituent oils (naphthalene and derivatives), 16% to 20% anthracene oil and approximately 50% bitumen.
It consists mainly of a complex mixture of thick cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It may contain phenolic compounds, aromatic nitrogen (N2) bases and their alkyl derivatives, as well as chain alkanes and olefins.
Coal Tar and its Products
The distillation of coal tar produces different fractions at temperatures ranging from 180 degrees Celsius to 350 degrees Celsius. Carbon black oil is a mixture of heavier distillates and soft bitumen. Carbon black oil is the basic raw material for the manufacture of carbon black, which is then used in the rubber and tyre industries.
Carbon black oil is used as a raw material by carbon black manufacturers who prefer its higher B.M.C.I and low sulphur content over imported raw materials.
Anthracene oil is a complex combination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and has a distillation range of approximately 300 degrees C to 450 degrees C. It is distilled from the primary distillation of coal tar. It is obtained in two fractions from the primary distillation of coal tar. The light boiling fraction (light anthracene oil) is high in phenanthrene, anthracene and carbazole, while the high boiling fraction (heavy anthracene oil) is high in fluoranthene and pyrene. The concentration of benzo(a)pyrene in anthracene oil varies between 0.01% and 0.06%.
Phenol is an aromatic organic compound derived from the distillation of coal tar in the temperature range 170°-201° with colourless, needle-like crystals that oxidise to a pink colour when exposed to air. Phenol is soluble in water, alkali solutions, alcohol, benzyl alcohol and acetone.
It is a key product in the commercial development of high tonnage engineering plastics such as polyamides, polycarbonates and various phenolic and epoxy acids.
It is a dark brownish-black, glossy, amorphous residue produced during the distillation of coal tar. It consists of a number of different compounds which interact to form a low eutectic mixture and therefore have no apparent melting or crystallisation point. Instead, it is characterised by a softening point (the temperature at which a given viscosity is reached).
Depending on the degree of distillation, bitumen with different softening points can be obtained. For example medium soft pitch or very hard pitch.
Crude benzene alcohol is produced during the carbonisation of coking coal. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons of the benzene series, consisting mainly of benzene, toluene and xylene, as well as several other minor components.
It is used as a feedstock for the extraction of benzene, toluene and xylene, in the solvent industry and for the production of industrial fuel oil blends.
